Second candidate for social welfare dean to visit

LAWRENCE — The second and final candidate for dean of the School of Social Welfare will visit the University of Kansas next week to visit the campus community and give a public presentation.

The search committee, chaired by Rick Ginsberg, dean of the School of Education, will welcome Harold E. Briggs, associate dean and professor of social work at the University of Georgia School of Social Work, on Tuesday, Dec. 2. A public presentation will begin at 3 p.m. in the Malott Room in the Kansas Union.

Briggs has served as associate dean at Georgia since 2012, where he serves as chair of the UGA accreditation function following the successful completion of its School of Social Work's seven-year program review. He previously was on the faculty at the Portland State University Graduate School of Social Work for 16 years.

The other finalist, Paul Richard Smokowski, visited Nov. 17. For additional information about both candidates, visit http://provost.ku.edu/dean-school-social-welfare.

The dean of the School of Social Welfare serves as its chief academic and administrative officer, and reports directly to the provost/executive vice chancellor. The next dean will be responsible for providing imaginative, effective, dynamic and transformational leadership to ensure the school’s long-term success.
