1952 Fulbright Scholar Jean Choplin to speak about international trade

LAWRENCE — The first French Fulbright student to pursue a business degree in 1952 will return to the University of Kansas next week to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Franco-U.S. Fulbright relationship. Jean Choplin is a co-founder of AIESEC, an organization focused on youth leadership for international peace-building and the development of cross-cultural understanding.

He will present "Transcultural Enrichment as a Stepping Stone for International Trade" at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Hall Center.

An ardent promoter of international exchange, cross-cultural understanding and international business, Choplin played a leading role in the resurgence of French business after World War II. After receiving a master's degree in business administration from the Ecole Superieure de Commerce de Paris in 1951, Choplin came to KU in 1952 as a Fulbright scholar.

Upon his return to France, he held executive positions in the textile, garment and construction industries for the next 25 years. He was general manager of the Prouvost Group and development manager for the Dumez Group, a prominent international construction contractor.

Turning 90 this October, Choplin is passionately committed to KU. Over the course of his career he has exemplified the ideals of citizen-to-citizen diplomacy, co-founding AIESEC in the wake of World War II and serving on KU’s CIBER Board of Directors. Choplin helped KU establish its study abroad program in Western Civilization with former University Distinguished Professor and Vice Chancellor for Research Andy DeBicki, and he served as the university’s chief alumni contact in France for years.
