LAWRENCE – Visual art students competing for annual scholarships will exhibit their work in a show April 29 at the University of Kansas. The exhibition is free, and the public is welcome.

The exhibit will feature art from more than 50 undergraduate students who have spent the last year exploring and experimenting in various studio areas and are eligible for scholarships based on their creative merits and academic performance.

“This show is a celebration of the year's deeply creative output and the talent and creative diversity of our students,” said Matt Burke, associate professor of visual art.

The exhibition begins with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. April 29 in the Chalmers Hall Gallery and fourth floor. During that time the department will also host open studios of senior and graduate students’ spaces on all floors of the building. The studios will be open to the public for Sunday only, while the rest of the exhibition will continue through April 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A range of disciplines will be represented, including ceramics, drawing, expanded media, jewelry/metalsmithing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and textiles.

Chalmers Hall is at the northeast corner of 15th Street and Naismith Drive. Visitor parking is available at the Allen Fieldhouse Parking Garage, 1501 Irving Hill Road.

The Department of Visual Art is one of four departments in the School of the Arts. As part of the KU College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the School of the Arts offers fresh possibilities for collaboration between the arts and the humanities, sciences, social sciences, international and interdisciplinary studies. The Department of Visual Art provides students with the technical skill and cultural awareness essential to the careers of professional artists, scholars, teachers or administrators.
