'Voices from Our Neighbors: Immigration Journeys to Lawrence' presentation set for Sept. 21

LAWRENCE — KU Libraries will host a Gallery Lecture Series presentation by Marta Caminero-Santangelo, professor of English and director of the Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies, and Tamara Falicov, professor of film & media studies and associate dean for research. The presentation, “Voices from Our Neighbors: Immigration Journeys to Lawrence,” is the first lecture in the fall Gallery Lecture Series lineup and will take place from 9:30-11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in Watson Library, third floor West.

This video presentation is the result of a joint service-learning course taught by Caminero-Santangelo and Falicov. In the course, “Bridging Borders: Latin American Immigration in Literature and Film,” the students studied representations of border crossing, immigration and culture. The students also worked closely with local nonprofit organization Centro Hispano to meet immigrants new to Lawrence and hear their stories.

In this lecture, Caminero-Santangelo and Falicov will discuss their course and the processes of their students in compiling these stories into a documentary. Lydia Diebolt from Centro Hispano will also be in attendance as a special contributor.

The fall Gallery Lecture Series is developed in conjunction with the Haricombe Gallery exhibition “Documented: Perspectives on Migration and Creation.” The Gallery Lecture Series features interdisciplinary lectures and creative works from scholars and researchers across campus and the community. This lecture is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided. For more information, visit the Gallery Lecture Series webpage.

The second event in the fall Gallery Lecture Series will be from 2-3:30 p.m. Oct. 30 and will feature Kathryn Vaggalis, doctoral candidate from the Department of American Studies, with a presentation titled “Queer Brides and Lonely Swains: American Picture Brides and the Effects of Marriage, Race and the Family on U.S. Immigration Policy.”
