Workshop will address experiential learning abroad

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas faculty and staff are invited to attend a workshop on Community Engagement and International Education, hosted by the Center for Civic and Social Responsibility and the Office of Study Abroad. The event will take place 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in the Jayhawk Room of the Kansas Union.

This workshop, third in the series Taking Experiential Learning Abroad, will focus on how intercultural and civic learning goals can be systematically advanced through experiential learning. Participants will explore how to further leverage the "aha" moments of applied learning into specific, targeted outcomes and will leave with content and framing relevant to their own courses and programs, both domestic and international. In addition, the workshop will discuss possible obstacles to effective service-learning and how experiential education can be "mis-educative" (sometimes re-affirming stereotypes), and it will provide tips for ensuring sufficient challenge and support to help students grow in intercultural and civic learning, whether through accredited or co-curricular programs.

This workshop will be led by Eric Hartman, assistant professor in the Staley School of Leadership Studies at Kansas State University and editor of globalsl.org, a site that amasses evidence-based tools and peer-reviewed research to advance best practices in global learning, cooperative development and community-university partnership. It is edited and overseen by researchers and practitioners who work with multiple methods and represent diverse fields, all concerned with the question of how to responsibly and ethically grow partnerships between educational institutions and communities

“Considering the growth with international service opportunities, both at KU and other research universities, it is an important time to bring someone like Dr. Hartman to the campus to discuss what is the foundation for high-quality international service," said John Augusto, associate vice provost for experiential learning.
