LAWRENCE – Doug Ward, Budig Professor of Writing at the School of Journalism, will present the Budig Writing Lecture at 4 p.m. Monday, April 16, in Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union.

Ward, associate professor of journalism, is giving the lecture as part of his 2011-12 Budig Teaching Professorship of Writing. The lecture incorporates music, video, images and other elements to illustrate where writing fits in the 21st century’s media landscape. He plans to begin his lecture, titled “The Role of Writing in a Multimedia World,” with music.

“Writing works on its own and video works on its own, but when you put those together you are able to create something that transcends both,” Ward said. “But it all starts with writing.”

“We are grateful for Gene and Gretchen Budig for establishing this professorship,” said Ann Brill, dean of the School of Journalism. “It is a wonderful opportunity to reinforce the value we place on excellence in writing and teaching.”

A reception will follow the event in the Traditions Area outside the auditorium.

Ward’s professorship is named after Gene and Gretchen Budig. Gene Budig was the University of Kansas’ 14th chancellor.

Ward received his bachelor’s from Kansas State University and worked at the Parsons Sun and Hutchinson News in Kansas before earning his master’s from KU’s journalism school in 1991. He earned his doctorate at the University of Maryland and has worked for the Philadelphia Daily News, Philadelphia Inquirer and New York Times. He returned to KU in 2004 to teach courses in writing, editing and journalism. He focuses his passion for journalism online on his personal website.
