OVERLAND PARK — KU Professional & Continuing Education (KUPCE) is offering a pair of August professional training programs at the Edwards Campus in Overland Park. The programs will address needs emphasized during recent collaborations between university and industry leaders.

KUPCE’s Science Manager Certification Program and the Getting Big Data symposium are the latest results of the collaborations. New research, educational content and resources at KU were explored to be adapted into these new training programs.

“Part of the mission of the KU Professional & Continuing Education is to respond with training and education for Kansas City’s workforce,” said Sharon Graham, KU Edwards Campus assistant vice chancellor for professional and continuing education. “These new programs are great examples of how we are working with these leaders to provide the training they want.”

The curriculum in the new Science Manager Certification Program will provide current and potential managers in technical- and science-related industries with essential management skills. The program’s first course begins Aug. 24.

KUPCE met with nearly 50 representatives from a variety of Kansas City industries who identified the need for big data training. Leading KU faculty and local experts will join together to share their insights at Getting Big Data, a symposium slated for Aug. 25–26 at the Edwards Campus.

“We were coming together with KU saying, ‘This is the training we want for ourselves and our own employees,’” said DJ Good, CEO and president of LK Communications. “When we are involved in the development of the training we need, it becomes much more powerful and responsive education.”

Information about these programs can be found at kupce.ku.edu.
