Royals G.M. Dayton Moore will give talk on leadership

LAWRENCE — The Dole Institute of Politics announced today the addition of a program with Dayton Moore, general manager of World Series Champions the Kansas City Royals. Moore will visit 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3 as a continuation of the Institute’s annual series on Leadership and Globalization in Sports.

Long referred to as “America’s Pastime,” baseball has stretched beyond the borders of the U.S. Heading up a 40-man roster that holds players from nine states and six countries, Moore will join the Dole Institute for a program discussing leadership, success and how he helped create a culture that led to the 2015 World Series crown.

This program will include a sale and signing for Moore’s book, “More Than a Season: Building a Championship Culture.” The event will be free, open to the public and located at the Dole Institute.

“We’re tremendously excited to be welcoming Dayton Moore to the Dole Institute on the heels of the Royals’ World Series Championship,” said Dole Institute Director Bill Lacy. “His leadership within the Royals organization has led to incredible success for the franchise. This program will be a great finish to our semester.”

A native Kansan, Dayton Moore was named senior vice president of baseball operations and general manager for the Kansas City Royals on May 30, 2006. After a magical run to the World Series in 2014 that ended in heartbreaking fashion, Moore’s work culminated in a 2015 World Series title for the Royals, the club’s first in 30 years.

His tenure in Kansas City has been one of the most successful runs in franchise history as the Royals have boasted 12 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, 18 All-Star Game selections and a Cy Young Award winner in his first nine seasons. In 2014, he was named “Executive of the Year” by Major League Baseball (GIBBY Awards) as well as the Kansas City Sports Commission. He was elected to the State of Kansas’ Baseball Hall of Fame and named Kansan of the Year by the Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas. Moore was also tabbed the 2014 Alumnus of the Year by George Mason University.
