LAWRENCE – West Side Folk, a nonprofit that has performed in Lawrence since 1996, will present two concerts this spring to benefit Kansas Public Radio.

West Side Folk has recruited Brother Sun and John Gorka to play for reduced fees, and all profits from the concerts will go to KPR, which recently sustained a $100,000 budget cut.

Brother Sun will appear at the Lied Center of Kansas Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. March 1. The group — composed of veteran touring singer-songwriters Greg Greenway, Pat Wictor and Joe Jencks — fuses folk, Americana, blues, pop, jazz, rock and a cappella singing. Their combined musical skills make for an unforgettable experience — three rich voices blending on a well-crafted foundation of guitar, slide guitar, piano, ukulele and bouzouki.

John Gorka will perform at the Lied Center of Kansas Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. May 8. This is Gorka’s first appearance in Lawrence in nine years. Rolling Stone has referred to Gorka as “the leading singer/songwriter of the New Folk movement,” while the Boston Globe said, “Gorka is widely heralded for the sophisticated intelligence and provocative originality of his songs.”

Tickets for both concerts are $25 and can be purchased at westsidefolk.org. All proceeds go to Kansas Public Radio and will help ensure that KPR can remain a trusted source of balanced news, beautiful music, and entertaining, intelligent talk to more than 100,000 weekly listeners.

“I’m thrilled, and so grateful, that West Side Folk has agreed to organize these concerts to benefit the station,” said Dan Skinner, director of KPR. “I’m looking forward to enjoying some great folk music with KPR supporters this spring.”

KPR is licensed to KU, broadcasts on 91.5 FM and 96.1 FM in Lawrence, 89.7 FM in Emporia, 91.3 FM in Olsburg-Junction City, 89.9 FM in Atchison, 90.3 FM in Chanute, and 99.5 FM and 97.9 FM in Manhattan. KPR can be heard online at http://kpr.ku.edu. KPR also operates KPR2, a news-talk programming stream, which can be heard on an HD receiver, on KPR’s website and on the 96.1 in Lawrence and 97.9 in Manhattan.
