LAWRENCE — Catalan police Thursday afternoon reported to international media that at least 13 people have died and more than 50 other people are injured after a vehicle rammed through a crowd in Barcelona.

The incident occurred in the busy Las Ramblas avenue that is often filled with tourists this time of year. Spanish authorities have said they arrested one man as a suspect.

Luis Corteguera, a University of Kansas professor of history who studies Spain, is available to speak about issues related to the apparent attack and the political and social history of the Catalonia region.

Corteguera's research has centered on early modern Spain. His first book, For the Common Good: Popular Politics in Barcelona, 1580–1640, examines how popular politics shaped the relations between Madrid and Barcelona in the decades leading to one of the greatest crises in Spanish history, the Catalan Revolt of 1640.
