LAWRENCE — Kansas Public Radio and Maceli's are hosting their second Songwriters Showcase, an evening of music featuring local singer-songwriters Sky Smeed, Colin Halliburton and K.C. banjo player Kelly Hunt. The show is Saturday, March 3, at Maceli's, 1031 New Hampshire St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door or $10.50 in advance at macelis.com.

Smeed is a local Americana singer-songwriter who has been compared to Neil Young and Gram Parsons. To date, Smeed has self-released five full-length albums. His most recent release, Lunker Bass, contains the Lawrence-inspired tune "Bumper Sticker," the pub-pleasing "Small Town Celebrations," heartfelt ballads like "Starting All Over Again" and the title cut's vivid narrative about a fishing trip from his youth.

Halliburton, who often performs under the musical moniker The Roseline, describes his music as "alt-country bummer music, with a hint of hope." The band is touring across the U.S. and abroad in support of their new album, Blood, which was released in October 2017.

Accompanied by her 1920s tenor banjo, Hunt's songs meld traditions of folk, blues, classic country and Appalachian old-time music for a sound that is all her own. Her debut album, Even the Sparrow, will be released this spring, with songs full of rich imagery and storytelling.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit Kansas Public Radio, which sustained a $200,000 budget cut this fiscal year. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the event.
