Kansas nature hikes inspired by KU professor's 'Words of a Feather' chapbook

LAWRENCE — A beginner-friendly nature walk series at sites throughout Kansas will build on the acclaim of a University of Kansas author’s recently published poetry chapbook about birds in the region.

This robin illustrates Megan Kaminski’s poem, “Under tree canopy,” in the new book “Words of a Feather.” Megan Kaminski, KU associate professor of English and author of “Words of a Feather,” and Molly Zahn, associate professor of religious studies and bird watcher, will discuss poetry and bird-watching at the following events:

  • 9 a.m. Aug. 29, Baker University Wetlands & Discovery Center, 1365 North 1250 Road, Lawrence
  • 9:30 a.m. Sept. 4, Kauffman Museum, North Newton
  • 9 a.m. Sept. 11, Prairie Museum of Art and History, Colby
  • 6 p.m. Sept. 11, Kinsey Public Library, Kinsley.

These humanities hikes will spark a discussion about fostering relationships of care and mutuality. The program will share tips for those new to birding and offer new possibilities for engaging with and within the common home.

Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, including hats, sunscreen, and bug spray, and to bring their own water.

Digital and print copies of “Words of a Feather,” illustrated by Brad Sneed, were published in spring 2021 by Humanities Kansas and made available at several state park and cultural centers across the state. The project was funded by Friends of the Humanities, the Elizabeth Schultz Environmental Fund of the Douglas County Community Foundation, Kansas Tourism and Kansas State Parks.
