63rd Annual Snyder Book Collecting Contest accepting submissions

LAWRENCE — KU Libraries are now accepting submissions for the 63rd annual Snyder Book Collecting Contest. All KU students — graduate and undergraduate — are eligible and encouraged to enter.

In 1957, Elizabeth Snyder established a book-collecting contest to cultivate and recognize students' interest in collecting books. In recent years, additions to the rules have been made to accept digital objects and non-print materials for submission as collections or in addition to books.

The contest features $1,100 in total cash awards for both graduate and undergraduate division recipients. Each year, the awards are provided through the Snyder Book Collecting Contest fund, which is managed by KU Endowment. In addition, each winner will receive a gift card from contest co-sponsor Jayhawk Ink, a division of KU Bookstore. Based on entries, first place, second place and honorable mentions are possible in each division.

An event to honor contestants and award recipients will take place April 4 in Watson Library, third floor West. The presentation of awards will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by a reception with food and drink.

The entry deadline for the 2019 competition is midnight March 17.

The 2018 winner in the undergraduate division was Alex Houston, of Lawrence, with the collection “Exploration and Conservation: Uniting Outdoor Recreation and Environmentalism Through Rock Climbing.” In the graduate division, Paul Schwennesen, of Weston, Missouri, placed first with his collection titled “Borderlands — A Manifesto of Overlap.”

First-place entries in each division are eligible for entry into the National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest, with a top prize of $2,500. In the past, contestants from KU have advanced to the national competition and earned top awards and prizes.
