Boise State CIO to present as 1st candidate for KU’s top tech post


Max Davis-Johnson, CIO of Boise State UniversityLAWRENCE — Max Davis-Johnson, chief information officer at Boise State University, will make a public presentation Monday, April 2, as a candidate for the chief information officer at the University of Kansas.

Davis-Johnson is the first of three candidates for the position who will make public presentations during their respective campus visits. Davis-Johnson’s talk will be at 10 a.m. in the Kansas Room of the Kansas Union.

As the CIO of Boise State University and a technology leader at Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University, Davis-Johnson has a record of transformational and innovative leadership. Since 2010 when Davis-Johnson joined Boise State, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) has been able to align technology priorities and resources to meet the needs of a growing and dynamic university. Under his leadership, OIT has been able to create a responsive, dynamic, innovative and world-class information technology organization at Boise State.

Davis-Johnson previously served as deputy university technology officer at Arizona State University, where he was responsible for all operations for the University Technology Office from 2009 through 2010.  He was also associate vice president for application development from 2005 through 2008. Prior to Arizona State, Davis-Johnson was the director of administrative computing at Northern Arizona University, a position he held since 1998. At both ASU and NAU, Davis-Johnson was the project director for their initial PeopleSoft Student and HCM implementations. Prior to that, he worked for 19 years in the Architectural Engineering Construction systems industry as a software developer, project manager, consultant and business developer for Peter Kiewit, HDR and HNTB.

Davis-Johnson is a KU graduate who earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. 

Carl Lejuez, search committee chair and dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, invites KU faculty, staff and students to take part in the public presentation for each CIO candidate and then provide feedback.

The university will release information about candidates roughly 24 hours before their respective presentations. Additional visits:

  • Candidate 2 presentation: 10-11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, Alderson Room, Kansas Union
  • Candidate 3 presentation: 10:30-11:30 a.m. April 9, Bruckmiller Room, Adams Alumni Center.

The CIO provides vision, leadership, oversight and management of KU's information technology services, infrastructure, hardware and software. The CIO ensures the university leverages technology to promote excellence in innovation, research and academics. The CIO provides management oversight of KU IT resources and leads the development, implementation and ongoing updates of the campus IT strategic plan. This effort focuses on the delivery of effective, efficient and secure IT services to the entire campus community. The CIO leads more than 275 universitywide IT professionals in the areas of strategic planning, research and technology services support, enterprise resource planning, business process management, information security, web services, business continuity planning and emergency preparedness. The CIO works collaboratively with KU leadership, faculty, staff and students across the university and represents KU IT activities to various external national organizations as well as divisions of state government.

Information about each candidate and the opportunity to provide feedback will be available on the CIO search website. The presentations will be recorded and available for viewing after the final candidate has presented. Feedback on the candidates will be due April 12.
