'Documented: Perspectives on Migration and Creation' exhibition to open in Haricombe Gallery on Sept. 4

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Libraries will open a new exhibition in the Haricombe Gallery this September. “Documented: Perspectives on Migration and Creation” showcases programs, initiatives, art and scholarship that explores the intersections between migration, immigration and creative identity. 

The transdisciplinary exhibition will feature work from researchers across the KU campus, as well as creative work by artists from within the university and the community. 

“The University of Kansas is home to a large and in-depth body of research and creative work addressing the deep societal concerns related to immigration and migration,” said Sarah Goodwin Thiel, community engagement librarian and exhibits program coordinator. “KU Libraries are honored to showcase a small portion of the many perspectives on immigration generated by interdisciplinary and citizen scholars throughout Lawrence and the Kansas City metro areas.”

The opening reception will be held in Watson Library, Third Floor West, on Sept. 4. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception, followed by a conversation at 6:15 p.m. with Israel Alejandro Garcia Garcia, artist, creative director and curator of Garcia Squared Contemporary.

“The libraries are very pleased to host this new exhibit. Not only does it showcase important work from across the KU campus on an issue of pressing concern, but it also continues a conversation that has been fostered by ‘Create Dangerously,’ this year’s KU Common Book,” said Kevin L. Smith, dean of libraries. “Creativity – in all its diversity, and with all the risks that creators take as they express themselves – is a core value of libraries and a key element for education at all levels.”

Exhibitions in KU Libraries’ Haricombe Gallery are collaborative in nature. They are designed to promote the creative scholarship of our campus community and highlight the strength of the libraries’ collections.
