LAWRENCE – Each spring visual art students enrolled in Expanded Media 307/542 experience a full run of the professional exhibition process. The students research, propose ideas, collaborate, produce the work, advertise the show and install it. This semester’s class will unveil work next week with “Quotidian.”

The installation work will be displayed from Monday, April 20, through Thursday, April 23, in the Art & Design Gallery. The exhibition will have an opening reception from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 21. The exhibition is free, and the public is welcome.

“Having firsthand experience with the complexity of an installation art exhibit is invaluable for young artists,” said Maria Velasco, associate professor of visual art. “The students learn how to budget, to collaborate with one another and to compromise without losing the core idea of the work.”

“Quotidian” draws attention to the typical path taken through the Art & Design Gallery, which is at times a straight line from one door to another. The class wondered what would happen if that path was disrupted. “Quotidian” will cover the entire floor of the gallery to see which paths viewers take or whether they choose an entirely different path altogether.

The Art and Design Building is at the northeast corner of 15th Street and Naismith Drive. Visitor parking is available at the Allen Fieldhouse Parking Garage, 1501 Irving Hill Road.

The Expanded Media area in the Department of Visual Art is dedicated to innovative forms of artistic expression and conceptual approaches to art, the pursuit of which lies beyond any one medium. Composed of Performance Art, Installation Art, Video, and Digital Strategies, Expanded Media provides an environment for students who wish to experiment and create interdisciplinary multiple media works.

The Department of Visual Art is one of four departments in the School of the Arts. As part of the KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of the Arts offers fresh possibilities for collaboration between the arts and the humanities, sciences, social sciences, international and interdisciplinary studies. The Department of Visual Art provides students with the technical skill and cultural awareness essential to the careers of professional artists, scholars, teachers or administrators.
