Students will explore the wonders of engineering at High School Design Competition


LAWRENCE — An outstanding opportunity to explore the wonders of engineering awaits hundreds of high school students from around northeast Kansas. The University of Kansas School of Engineering’s annual High School Design competition is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the KU Engineering complex.

The event will feature competitions in six categories, giving students a taste of real-world engineering applications and providing the university with a chance to recruit top talent from around the region.

The theme for this year’s competition is “Under the Sea.”

Here’s a look at the competitions: 

  • Aerospace engineering: Contestants will design and fly water rockets.
  • Bioengineering: Students will try to design a functioning heart for a fish.
  • Chemical engineering: Teams will be challenged to design a device to clean up an oil spill.
  • Computer science: Students will be challenged on tests of programming logic and algorithmic thinking.
  • Civil engineering: Contestants will work on wood bridge construction.
  • Mechanical engineering: Students will explore the principles of hydraulic movements.

A total of $12,000 in scholarships will be awarded to winning teams.

The event is hosted by the Self Engineering Leadership Fellows Program. Corporate sponsors include Garmin, Evergy, SOR and Textron Aviation. A pizza lunch will be provided for participants and their teachers or sponsors.
