KU Law Veterans Legal Support Clinic to host suicide prevention and wellness program for veterans and first responders

LAWRENCE — The Veterans Legal Support Clinic at the University of Kansas School of Law will host a free “Lunch and Learn” program focused on suicide prevention, de-escalation techniques and personal wellness planning for veterans and their family members, law enforcement officers and first responders June 16. The program will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Burge Union, 1565 Irving Hill Road, on the KU campus.

The event will feature three educational sessions: “Art of De-escalation,” suicide prevention training and "Bad Day Planning," a practical approach to preparing for personal challenges and mental health crises. Attendees will also have access to a resource fair featuring organizations and services that support veterans.

“The Veterans Legal Support Clinic at KU Law is excited to host this critical information and resource session for our Kansas veterans,” said Director Jeff Shull. “KU continues its tradition of supporting our veterans by bringing in community stakeholders across the area. Representatives from more than 20 organizations will be involved. Together we are all reaching out to provide our former military members with tools they can use when facing a crisis, having a bad day or lending a helping hand to a battle buddy.”

The program is being hosted by VLSC in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Eastern Kansas Health Care System, Veterans Treatment Courts, the Kansas Justice League and the Robert Irvine Foundation.

Organizers said family members are encouraged to attend because they often play a critical role in recognizing signs of distress and supporting veterans during difficult times.

Following the educational program, the Robert Irvine Foundation will host a “Breaking Bread with Heroes” lunch. Advance registration is required for those wishing to participate in the lunch portion of the event.
