KU Marching Jayhawks to represent university in London at Union Jack Classic
LAWRENCE — Members of the University of Kansas Marching Jayhawks will travel to London this month to represent KU at the Union Jack Classic, where the band will perform at the KU football game against Arizona State University on Sept. 19 at Wembley Stadium.
The international trip will give the Marching Jayhawks opportunities to connect with Jayhawks and audiences abroad while supporting the football team throughout the weekend. In addition to performing at the game, the band will appear at pep rallies and tailgates in London and perform on Fox Sports’ “Big Noon Kickoff” before the game.
During the football game, the Marching Jayhawks will collaborate with the ASU Sun Devil Marching Band on musical selections featuring artists including Coldplay and Bruno Mars.
The trip continues the Marching Jayhawks’ tradition of representing KU beyond its campuses and providing students with opportunities to perform for new audiences around the world.
“By engaging with Jayhawks abroad and communities around the world, the Marching Jayhawks hope to share the message of just how special the University of Kansas and its students are,” said Sharon Toulouse, director of the Marching Jayhawks.
Melissa Sawyer, assistant director of the Marching Jayhawks, said the experience will give students an opportunity to support KU while gaining a broader perspective through international travel.
"We are looking forward to supporting KU in London. I know our students will be positively impacted by this opportunity and will gain a new appreciation for the world around us," Sawyer said.
