'Queer Brides and Lonely Swains: American Picture Brides and the Effects of Marriage, Race and the Family on U.S. Immigration Policy' set for Oct. 30

LAWRENCE — KU Libraries will host a Gallery Lecture Series presentation by Kathryn Vaggalis, doctoral candidate from the Department of American Studies. The presentation, titled “Queer Brides and Lonely Swains: American Picture Brides and the Effects of Marriage, Race and the Family on U.S. Immigration Policy,” is the second lecture in the fall Gallery Lecture Series lineup and will take place from 2-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Watson Library, third floor West.

Vaggalis will discuss stories of early 20th century Japanese picture brides, the popular term in memory, scholarship and pop culture for women in arranged marriages who came to the United States to meet the immigrant men they married by proxy.

In this lecture, Vaggalis will explain how the experiences of these woman influenced the history of racial formations in the U.S. and the contradictory ways that immigration policy has been shaped by American ideas of marriage, family and sexuality.

The fall Gallery Lecture Series is developed in conjunction with the Haricombe Gallery exhibition “Documented: Perspectives on Migration and Creation.” The Gallery Lecture Series features interdisciplinary lectures and creative works from scholars and researchers across campus and the community. This lecture is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided. For more information, visit the Gallery Lecture Series webpage.
