School of Architecture & Design announces Spring 2020 Hallmark Symposium lectures



LAWRENCE — The School of Architecture & Design at the University of Kansas has announced the Spring 2020 Hallmark Symposium Lecture Series lineup.  

The Hallmark Symposium Lecture Series was established in 1984 through the generosity of the Hallmark Corporate Foundation with the goal and intention of enriching the education of students at the University of Kansas and in support of those in particular in the Department of Design through exposure to designers, artists and educators from the United States and abroad. During these nearly 30-plus years of collaboration, approximately 10,000 students have been exposed to this rich array of practitioners. 

Lectures begin at 6 p.m. in 110 Budig Hall. They are free and open to the public. 

Feb. 6: Brad Lacey 

Brad Lacey is the global design director of Lifestyle Footwear at New Balance Corporation. With a multifocus approach that encompasses all aspects of footwear design – from visual styling to construction, to material testing to developing new manufacturing process – Lacey balances product legacy, design innovation and rigorous craftmanship to steward an iconic American brand.    

Feb. 20: Alejandro Cartagena 

Alejandro Cartagena lives and works in Monterrey, Mexico. His projects employ landscape and portraiture as a means to examine social, urban and environmental issues. Cartagena's work has been exhibited internationally in more than 50 group and individual exhibitions in spaces, including the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris and the CCCB in Barcelona. His work resides in several museum collections, including the San Francisco MOMA, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago and the Portland Museum of Art. 

March 5: Jeremy Spears  

Jeremy Spears is an Annie Award-winning story artist at the Walt Disney Animation Studios. His latest projects at the studio include "Frozen," "Big Hero 6," "Zootopia," "Moana" and "Ralph Breaks the Internet." He has also done story work and woodcarving for Walt Disney Imagineering on projects at Disneyland and Disney World. 

March 26: Lissa Rivera 

Lissa Rivera is a photographer and curator based in New York City. Rivera received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, where she became fascinated with the social history of photography and the evolution of identity, sexuality and gender in relationship to material culture. Beautiful Boy, Rivera's latest project, takes her interest in photography's connection with identity to a personal level, focusing on her domestic partner as muse. 

APRIL 16: Bon Ku 

Dr. Bon Ku is the assistant dean for health & design at Thomas Jefferson University. A practicing emergency medicine physician, he is also the director of the Health Design Lab and created the first design-thinking program at a medical school. His innovative program tackles health care inequalities as a form of social justice and teaches future physicians to apply human-centered design to health care challenges. Health Design Lab’s work toward building healthier cities and communities has been featured in The New York Times, CNBC and Architectural Digest.  

April 30: Bil Donovan 

Bil Donovan is one of the most prolific and esteemed fashion and lifestyle illustrators working today. As an artist, author, educator and spokesperson, he is a true champion of the art form. His client list includes Christian Dior, where he has served as artist-in-residence since 2009, as well as Neiman Marcus, Vogue, St. Regis Hotels, Kim Crawford Vineyards, Saks, New York Magazine, Elle and L’Occitane.
