School of Education continues free professional development in Kansas City

OVERLAND PARK — The School of Education at the University of Kansas has announced dates for the 2018-2019 Strategies Event Series, which will include three interactive professional development lectures at the Edwards Campus in Overland Park.

The first session of the series, “The Illusion of Average: Using UDL to Break Down Barriers & Build in Flexibility,” will feature Eva Horn, professor, and Stephanie Parks, lecturer in the Department of Special Education. The presentation will explore the illusion of the “average” student and advocate for the use of universal design for learning.

Horn and Parks’ session will take place at 9 a.m. Nov. 3 in Room 120 of the BEST Building. The session is free and open to the public, though an RSVP is required.

The second session of the series will be at 9 a.m. Feb. 23, 2019. Steven Case, director of KU’s Center for STEM Learning, will present alongside Carrie La Voy and Laurie Cleavinger, both from the Department of Curriculum & Teaching. The presentation title and description will be announced later this year.

The third and final session of the 2018-2019 series will be April 13, 2019. Katie Zimmerman and Irma Brasseur-Hock from the Department of Special Education will present on co-teaching to support students with learning and behavioral needs.

“Each summer we host a free day of professional development called the Strategies for Educational Improvement Conference,” said Rick Ginsberg, dean of the School of Education. “We see this event series at the KU Edwards Campus as an extension of our goal and intention to support teachers and classrooms in the region.”
