Author Margaret Atwood to give lecture


LAWRENCE — The Commons will bring renowned writer and activist Margaret Atwood to the University of Kansas to deliver the Kenneth A. Spencer Memorial Lecture.

The event will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 2, 2015, in the Ballroom in the Kansas Union. A book-signing and reception will follow.

A Booker Prize-winning author, Atwood has written more than 30 works, including poetry, children's literature, fiction and nonfiction. Some of her most famous novels include “The Edible Woman, “The Handmaid's Tale,” “The Robber Bride,” “Alias Grace,” “The Blind Assassin,” “Oryx and Crake” and “The Year of the Flood.” Her nonfiction book “Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth,” part of the Massey Lecture series, was recently made into a documentary. Her newest novel, “MaddAddam” completes the Oryx and Crake trilogy, which is being adapted into an HBO TV series. Atwood’s most recent book, a collection of short stories titled “Stone Mattress,” was published last month.

Atwood has been publishing for more than 50 years, and her work has been translated into more than 40 languages. In 2004, she co-invented the LongPen, a remote signing device that allows someone to write in ink anywhere in the world via tablet PC and the internet. She is also a popular personality on Twitter.

The event will be free and open to the public.
