HSES professor to receive national Athletic Trainer Service Award

LAWRENCE — Phillip Vardiman, associate professor in the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences (HSES) at the University of Kansas, has been selected to receive the 2015 Athletic Trainer Service Award, granted by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).

This prestigious national award recognizes NATA members for their exceptional and unique contributions to the athletic training profession. It reflects a lifetime of dedication to the association and the field of athletic training at the national and district levels. As volunteers at the local and state levels, Athletic Trainer Service Award recipients have been involved in professional associations, community organizations, grassroots public relations efforts and service as a volunteer athletic trainer. No other award, NATA or otherwise, is a prerequisite for eligibility for the ATSA.

“I am honored to be nominated for this award and for being selected by the NATA organization in the class of 2014 with the other deserving recipients,” Vardiman said. “I also need to recognize those who have supported me during my service activities. My wife, Bethany, and my daughters, Rylie and Hailey, have been wonderful and continue to support me in all that I do. Joe Weir, HSES department chair; Andy Fry, former HSES department chair, and Rick Ginsberg, dean of the School of Education, have been very supportive of my service efforts for athletic training both on- and off-campus.”

Award eligibility requirements:

  • NATA member in good standing
  • 20 years BOC certification
  • 20 years membership in NATA

Vardiman was nominated by David Carr, Missouri State University; and he received advocate letters from Amy Cahill, Via Christi Hospital in Wichita; Aric Warren, Oklahoma State University; and Lynn Bott, Baker University.

Athletic Trainer Service Award recipients will be recognized during the general session June 25 at the 2015 NATA Convention in St. Louis.

The Department of Health, Sport, & Exercise Sciences is housed in the School of Education. It is a nationally ranked school, preparing educators and health/sport/exercise professionals as leaders.
