KU to host economic policy conference on immigration

LAWRENCE — Immigration and its impact on the state economy will be the topic of this year’s Kansas Economic Policy Conference on Oct. 13 at the Kansas Union.
Hosted by the Institute for Policy & Social Research at the University of Kansas, the annual conference will feature presentations from various immigration experts, as well as a panel discussion with Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, American Immigration Council Executive Director Benjamin E. Johnson and prominent immigration attorney Alberto Cardenas.
In addition, this year’s conference will be broadcast live via satellite to Pioneer Communications in Ulysses, making it accessible to western Kansas residents who can’t make the trip to Lawrence.
“Immigration is an important topic that has major ramifications on the state and national economies,” said Donna Ginther, professor of economics and director of the Center for Science, Technology & Economic Policy at KU. “The goal of this conference is to get past the noise that often surrounds the topic and look at it from an economic perspective, analyzing its costs and benefits. We have some incredible speakers at this year’s conference, and attendees can look forward to a great discussion on this issue.”

For more than 25 years, IPSR has hosted the annual Kansas Economic Policy Conference and dedicated it to a particular policy issue. Last year’s conference, titled “Public Education: An Investment in the Kansas Economy,” featured the heads of the state’s Regents institutions discussing their organizations’ contribution to the Kansas economy.
IPSR brings together social scientists from a broad range of disciplines to pursue and conduct sponsored research at the international, national, regional, state and local levels.
