LAWRENCE — Kansas Public Radio’s “Retro Cocktail Hour” will bring Cinema a Go-Go back to the big screen with two cult classics. The event begins at 7 p.m. Aug. 23 at Liberty Hall.
“The Abominable Dr. Phibes,” starring Vincent Price, follows Dr. Anton Phibes, a mad genius who blames his beloved wife's death on the medical team that attended her surgery. Phibes devises a series of murders based on the Ten Plagues of Egypt. This 1971 film has become a favorite of movie lovers for its art deco sets, blacker-than-black humor and an over-the-top performance by Price.
“Danger! Death Ray!” is a 1967 Eurospy adventure starring onetime movie Tarzan Gordon Scott. A scientist invents a death ray "for peaceful purposes" and promptly gets snatched by the bad guys. It's up to secret agent Bart Fargo to save the day.
General admission tickets are $10 and available for purchase at the Liberty Hall box office. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. KPR staff will sell “Retro Cocktail Hour” T-shirts and the new Kansas Public Radio T-shirts before the show and during intermission.
