Educate & Act Series resumes in spring 2023 with new topics around civic engagement, democracy

LAWRENCE — The Educate & Act series, led by The Commons, the Center for Service Learning and the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity, will host four virtual events in spring 2023 for University of Kansas students, staff and faculty. This series offers opportunities to learn more about individual issues and general engagement in democracy in the United States, offering information and sharing resources about civic participation.

The first session, planned for noon Feb. 2, will be led by the Emily Taylor Center and will explore the organizing efforts taken by many groups in response to the August 2022 statewide vote on abortion access. Several local organizers will share about their experiences with educating the public about the specific issue and language used in the proposed text amendment. This event features speakers Sandy Brown, president of the Kansas Abortion Fund; Donnavan Dillon, Lawrence organizer for Vote Neigh Kansas; Melinda Lavon, chair of the Vote No Kansas PAC; Nigel Morton, senior Kansas organizer for URGE, and moderator Pere DeRoy, doctoral candidate in women, gender & sexuality studies.

A second session will take place at noon March 2, exploring disability justice as it is currently being addressed in local and national policy. Subsequent sessions are scheduled for noon March 23, centering misinformation and global democracy; and noon April 6, featuring a conversation about housing instability and mental health.

Registration is open for the first event.
