Educate & Act Series continues in fall with opportunities to learn about recent local activism, upcoming election participation

LAWRENCE — The Educate & Act series, led by the Center for Service Learning, the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity and The Commons, will host two events this semester for students, staff, and faculty at the University of Kansas. This series offers opportunities to learn more about specific topics and general engagement in democracy in the United States through information and resources about civic participation.

In a shift to in-person events this semester, Educate & Act will take place at the Sabatini Multicultural Resource Center in the OMA Classroom. The first session, at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 12, is led by the Emily Taylor Center and will explore the organizing efforts taken by the No SB 180 in Lawrence Campaign — an activist group that sought to ensure that the Kansas State Bill 180, which requires Kansas residents to be documented and divided in spaces according to their “sex assigned at birth,” would not be enforceable in Lawrence.

This event features:

  • Raine Flores-Peña (he/him), KU student and NO SB 180 in Lawrence
  • Monroe Hanson (they/them), NO SB 180 in Lawrence
  • Jamie Miller (she/her), NO SB 180 in Lawrence
  • Monty Protest (he/him & she/her), KU student and NO SB 180 in Lawrence
  • Megan Williams (she/her), NO SB 180 in Lawrence
  • Donnavan Dillon (he/him), KU student and LoudLight, moderator.

A second session, led by the Center for Service Learning, will take place at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 3 and will be held in conjunction with National Voter Education Week.

Refreshments will be provided.
