Annual Shutz Lecture to consider 'Science of Better'


Associate Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management Suman MallikLAWRENCE — Suman Mallik, associate professor of operations and supply chain management at the University of Kansas, will deliver the annual Shutz Lecture at 3:30 p.m. March 28 in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union. All are welcome to attend, and a reception will follow.

Mallik, who also is the B. Allen and Dorothy V. Lay Mid-career Professor at the School of Business, was honored with the Byron T. Shutz Award for Excellence in Teaching during the annual KU Teaching Summit in August 2018. His presentation is titled “My Research and the Science of Better.” Mallik's research interests are in the areas of health care operations management, operations-marketing interface, supply chain management and operational problems in service industries.

He joined KU in 2008 and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in the areas of operations management, supply chain management and logistics management. Mallik has won several teaching awards including the Frank Pinet Teaching Excellence Fellowship, the Dykes-Budig Teaching Professorship award and the Henry A. Bubb Award for outstanding teaching. MBA students selected him to receive the MBA Marketing and Supply Chain Management Faculty Award in 2015 and 2017.

He has a doctorate in operations management and a master’s degree in management science and applied economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He also earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, respectively.

The Byron T. Shutz Award, established in 1978, recognizes distinguished teaching by a KU faculty member. Each year the award alternates between honoring outstanding teaching in any discipline and teaching in the fields of economics and business.
