School of Education continues free professional development in KC


OVERLAND PARK — The School of Education at the University of Kansas will host the second session of the 2018-2019 Strategies Event Series later this month at the Edwards Campus.

The second session of the free professional development series, “The Challenges of Problem-based & Project-based Learning in the Classroom,” will feature Steven Case, director of KU’s Center for STEM Learning, and Carrie La Voy and Laurie Cleavinger, both from the Department of Curriculum & Teaching. The presentation will allow participants to examine problem-based and project-based learning in the K-18 classroom; explore a model for developing projects; and view examples in various content areas.

The session will take place at 9 a.m. Feb. 23 in 120 BEST Building. The session is free and open to the public, though an RSVP is required.

The third and final session of the 2018-2019 series, “Co-Teaching to Support Students with Learning and Behavioral Needs is scheduled for April 13. Katie Zimmerman and Irma Brasseur-Hock from the Department of Special Education will present.

The first session of the series, which took place in November 2018, featured Eva Horn and Stephanie Parks from the Department of Special Education. They presented “The Illusion of Average: Using UDL to Break Down Barriers and Build in Flexibility.”
