Architecture alumnus and futurist to speak

Mon, 11/17/2014

LAWRENCE — One of Forbes magazine's Next-Gen Innovators for 2014, Jordan Brandt, will present “Teaching Our Machines to Design and Make Things” at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at The Forum at Marvin Hall.

Brandt is a technology futurist at Autodesk, producer of 3-D design and engineering software. His educational and professional background spans the architecture, aerospace, cloud computing and composites-manufacturing industries.

He joined Autodesk in 2011 when it acquired Horizontal Systems, a company he co-founded and where he served as CEO. It created one of the first cloud-based applications for computing and modeling building design.

Brandt received his bachelor's degree in architecture from KU and his doctorate in building technology from Harvard University, where his dissertation was on the concept of distributed manufacturing systems for composite materials.

He also worked at the A. Zahner Company of Kansas City, Missouri, an innovative manufacturer of architectural metals that cover dozens of iconic buildings, including the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. He has consulted extensively with the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Office of Naval Research developing 3D printing technologies.

His presentation is a part of the Department of Architecture Lecture series.
