More Information

LAWRENCE – Changes to the state tax code and reworking the school funding formula are likely top priorities when Gov. Sam Brownback delivers his State of the State address, and KPR will air it live.

The coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, the first week of the 2012 Kansas legislative session. The speech will last approximately 35 minutes and will be followed by the Democratic Party response.

KPR Statehouse Bureau Chief Stephen Koranda will co-host the public radio and public TV coverage with Jennifer Schmidt, host of the public TV program “Ask Your Legislator.” After the speeches, KPR will offer in-depth analysis with KPR News Director J. Schafer and KU political science professor Burdett Loomis.

“As Governor Brownback begins his second year in office, he’s likely to lay out an ambitious agenda for the Legislature,” Schafer said. “Taxes, school funds, social issues, redistricting, health care; it’s all on the table this session. His speech will let Kansans know his priorities.”

Kansas Action for Children in Topeka is the exclusive underwriting sponsor of the broadcast.

KPR’s coverage of the speech is offered to other public radio stations in the state for free. KRPS-Pittsburg, KMUW-Wichita, KHCC-Hutchinson, KANZ-Garden City and KCUR-Kansas City, Mo., plan to carry the broadcast.

KPR, licensed to the University of Kansas, broadcasts on 91.5 FM in Lawrence, 89.7 FM in Emporia, 91.3 FM in Olsburg-Junction City, 89.9 FM in Atchison, 90.3 FM in Chanute, and 99.5 FM and 97.9 FM in Manhattan. KPR can be heard on the Internet. KPR also operates KPR2, a news-talk channel on HD Radio. Those broadcasts can be heard on an HD receiver or on KPR's website.
