LAWRENCE — This summer marked the 10th anniversary of the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics dedication at the University of Kansas. The Dole Institute will commemorate this milestone throughout the 2013-2014 school year with a special 10th anniversary program series relating directly to former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole and his legacy alongside its regular program schedule.

“It’s going to be an exciting year at the Dole Institute. Highlighting Senator Dole’s extensive career and legacy through specific programs was a natural way to honor a decade of great programming and our extensive Dole Archives,” said Dole Institute Director Bill Lacy. “It will be fun to host our first Dole Fellows Reunion as well. The Fellows are a true testament to our mission of bipartisanship and public service.”

The 10th anniversary series will focus on disabilities, the budget deficit and the work of Richard Ben Cramer, author of “What It Takes,” a chronicle of the 1988 presidential campaign. A highlight of this series will be a two-day event featuring former Dole Fellows from the past 10 years in paneled discussions covering topics such as the gridlock in Washington, bringing civility back to politics and the future of the two major political parties.

In addition to the special anniversary series, the Dole Institute will bring back its popular debate program, “Neutral Ground,” with a deliberation on the death penalty. It also will feature an interview with the author who inspired much of the content for the movie “Lincoln.”

The Dole Institute’s lineup of programs for the fall semester:

In today’s economy, private entrepreneurs and businesses innovate, produce and compete vigorously, with consumers benefiting in the end. Entrepreneurs take incredible risk. That’s why it’s important to find the best resources and learn how to make government work for you. This fall, Dole Fellow Sarian Bouma will explore the art of entrepreneurship, the role of government  and opportunities to go global. Study group sessions will take place on the following Wednesdays: Sept. 18, 25; Oct. 2, 9, 23, 30; Nov. 6.

Monday, Sept. 23, Dole Institute

Afternoon Time TBA - Solutions Workshop

7:30 p.m. - Fixing the Deficit

Bob Dole was a deficit hawk. But what would you do to fix the nation’s budget? In true Dole Institute bipartisan spirit, this two-part program will explore the complexities of our nation’s budget with members of both parties. The day will begin with a “workshop,” led by Slattery and Tauke, where attendees can brainstorm and discuss possible ways to reduce the federal deficit. Then join us that evening for a discussion on the importance of dealing with the deficit and how it can be done in bipartisan fashion.

Neutral Ground: “Resolved: The Death Penalty Shall Be Abolished”

7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, Dole Institute

The Dole Institute’s popular issue debate program, Neutral Ground, returns. At a time when rational discourse is at an all-time low and bickering is obvious for all to see, the Dole Institute provides a forum for measured and civil debate. Join us as advocates Pedro Irigonegaray and Ed Duckers argue this important topic complete with expert witnesses.

Fort Leavenworth Series: At Home & Abroad: Topics in World War II “Bitter Victory? The Allied Campaign for Sicily Revisited”

Since 2005, some of the country’s most experienced political practitioners, journalists and business professionals have been fellows at the Dole Institute of Politics. For two days this fall, our past fellows will join us again to discuss the future of the two parties, how to restore civility and courtesy to the political debate and how to solve gridlock in Washington. This program exemplifies Senator Dole’s vision of the Institute as a center for community, students and faculty to engage in civil discourse on important issues and hear diverse perspectives on a wide range of topics that intersect politics. Topics and Fellows for each panel will be released in the upcoming weeks.

10th Anniversary Series

7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, Dole Institute

Executive Director of US International Council on Disabilities, David Morrissey, will address the pivotal policy changes, the ever-changing face of disability challenges in America and Senator Bob Dole’s tireless work on this important issue. Morrissey’s group played a major role in the efforts, endorsed by Dole, to get the Senate to pass the recent United Nations treaty on the rights of persons with disabilities.

10th Anniversary Series

Dole Institute Journalism & Politics Lecture: The Work of Richard Ben Cramer with Mark Zwonitzer

7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, Dole Institute

Richard Ben Cramer’s seminal book on politics, “What It Takes,” is arguably the best book ever written about presidential character, with a depth that became a style guide for many contemporary political writers. It is also the definitive book on Bob Dole. Writer, director, producer, Mark Zwonitzer, of PBS’s “The American Experience”, served as research assistant on the book and the two men developed a personal and professional friendship that would last until Cramer’s untimely death last year. Join Zwonitzer as he takes us inside Cramer’s craft to remember the writer and his acclaimed work with a special look at “What It Takes.”

Fort Leavenworth Series: At Home & Abroad: Topics in World War II “Whirlwinds of Flame: The Strategic Bombing of Japan in the World War II”

3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, Dole Institute

Annual Veteran’s Gala

6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, Dole Institute

Celebrate and remember our nation’s veterans at the Dole Institute’s annual USO-style gala.

Book Talk “Global Crossings: Immigration, Civilization, and America”
3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, Dole Institute

Author and Independent Institute Fellow Alvaro Vargas Llosa will discuss his book, which calls for pro-legal immigration reform as an alternative to the flawed solutions being suggested in Congress. This agenda will make immigration a defining force in the arena of competitive globalization, and the people of those countries who embrace immigration will enjoy more prosperous, peaceful and freer lives in the emerging world.

Emancipation: Lincoln & the 13th Amendment

7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, Dole Institute

Michael Vorenberg’s book, “Final Freedom: The Civil War, the Abolition of Slavery, and the Thirteenth Amendment,” was heavily consulted for the film “Lincoln.” One year after Lincoln’s amazing premier, historian and Brown University professor Vorenberg offers fascinating insight on the dramatic creation of a constitutional amendment that, in the end, redefined America.

Shortly after his loss in the 1996 presidential election, Bob Dole received a proposal to entrust his congressional papers, accrued over 35 years of public service, to KU, where he had studied before World War II service interrupted his studies.

Today, the Dole Institute continues its noble beginnings, hosting dozens of public programs each year discussing a variety of contemporary and historical issues. These programs have featured many national and world leaders, including former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton; President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos, former President of Poland Lech Walesa; former President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko; Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Samuel Alito; Vic President Joe Biden; former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright; former Senators Bob and Elizabeth Dole, Howard Baker, Tom Daschle and George Mitchell; NBC Anchor Tom Brokaw; Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Bob Woodward and David Broder; and countless other prominent journalists, authors, historians, business leaders, scientists and political practitioners.
