Public invited to Second Annual Day of Creativity

LAWRENCE — The Second Annual Day of Creativity — presented by The Commons, the KU Natural History Museum and the Spencer Museum of Art — invites University of Kansas and Lawrence communities to celebrate their creative sides. The all-ages event will be noon-3 p.m. April 24, with activities and attractions at the Natural History Museum, The Commons and outdoors on Jayhawk Boulevard.

More than 20 performances, demonstrations and hands-on activities will explore creativity through the arts, sciences and humanities. Demonstrations include milling lumber, firing pottery, rubber chicken science, a giant Tesla coil and how to press plants. Activities include painting and other crafts, an interactive instrument that creates sound through movement and gesture, sun prints and a theater prop photo booth. The KU Pep Band, accompanied by Big Jay, will perform at 2 p.m.

“We’re encouraging people to explore creativity by asking questions, solving problems, making connections and creating things,” said Kitty Steffens, visitor services and events coordinator at the Natural History Museum. 

The event will also feature specimens from the KU Natural History Museum and objects from the Spencer Museum of Art’s Classroom Collection.

“Our museums have brought together an exciting array of fun, creative people from across Lawrence and KU to provide experiences that are designed to expand, explore and maybe reawaken your creativity,” said Amanda Martin-Hamon, associate director of community engagement at the Spencer Museum.

The Day of Creativity will take place rain or shine, and Jayhawk Boulevard will be closed during the event in front of the Natural History Museum. Local food trucks will be onsite selling refreshments.
