LAWRENCE — If you love music, collect vinyl records or simply need to update your stereo system with quality equipment for a good price, then stop by Kansas Audio-Reader’s annual benefit sale, For Your Ears Only. The 17th annual event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper St., Building No. 21. For the first time, this year’s sale will feature food trucks and express passes. Thousands of vinyl records and CDs, along with vintage and modern audio equipment, will be sold for below-market prices.

Friday night’s festivities include free food donated by local businesses, cool prizes and first pick on a wide array of vinyl, CDs, audio equipment and musical instruments. Advance tickets are available for $10 at Audio-Reader, 1120 W. 11th St. They are $15 the night of the event. New this year is the Express Pass ticket option for $25. Customers can skip the main line and walk in through a separate line when the doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is free Saturday, with many items significantly reduced after noon.

This year, cool off with Kona Ice in the parking lot of the fairgrounds Friday night. The vendor will offer its shaved ice for purchase. On Saturday, local Apothecary Food Truck will be on site during the entire sale for hungry shoppers to purchase locally sourced food such as sandwiches, salads, fried pickles and more.

Lawrence, Topeka and Kansas City residents donated LP collections, musical instruments, and gently used vintage and modern audio equipment to the sale.

Items include 11,000 CDs and DVDs, over 8,000 vinyl albums, more than 300 pieces of audio equipment, including dozens of turntables, and several interesting instruments such as violins, an electric violin, acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards, trombone and several autoharps.

This year’s audio highlights:

  • A very clean McIntosh C-28 solid state preamp with walnut cabinet that looks like the day it was built
  • A great selection of Advent, Boston, Fisher, Kenwood, Polk, Bose, and Canton speakers
  • A like-new pair of AR-4x compact two-way speakers in walnut enclosures
  • Sony TA-3200F power amplifier
  • A clean trio of Rotel Tuner, Preamp and Power Amplifier
  • Plenty of Kenwood, JVC, Onkyo, Yamaha, Pioneer, Technics and Sony receivers
  • An unusual Hafler Irish high-end tuner
  • Vintage Kenwood, Pioneer, Fisher tube and solid state classic receivers
  • Several turntables.

Proceeds from the sale benefit Audio-Reader, a service organization providing free reading and information services for individuals who are blind and visually impaired. The University of Kansas decided in the last year to cease direct funding to Audio-Reader, making fundraisers like, For Your Ears Only, vital to Audio-Reader’s operation. Funds from the sale go directly to helping Audio-Reader listeners stay connected with their communities and live a life of greatest, possible personal independence.
