Writing a media advisory

A media advisory is an invitation to reporters to cover an event or to speak with a source on an important topic of the day. In this way, news media understand that an advisory is not a news release that can be used with light editing or as is.

Notably, some media advisories are issued for events to which the public is not invited but which reporters may attend. That is why it’s important to work with KU News or Public Affairs on these types of media advisories.

For most public events, a media advisory or a note for editors in the news release is not necessary. The exception is if reporters will have an opportunity for special access to a guest, location, etc., not available to the public.
