KU to host tenth anniversary commemoration of Sept. 11, 2001
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas will mark the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 with a series of events, including a presentation by a 9/11 survivor.
Student Union Activities will begin the commemoration with a flag display on the lawn of Stauffer-Flint Hall Sept. 9 to honor victims. The display will be in place until Sept. 12.
The Jayhawks' football game versus Northern Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 10 will be known as Heroes Day. Reduced rate tickets are available for members of the military, police, fire and medical personnel, as well as teachers. Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little will read from the preamble to the U.S. Constitution, and the words will be displayed on the stadium's video screen. Fans will be invited to recite the preamble with Gray-Little. The game kicks off at 6 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.
Danforth Chapel will be reserved for moments of reflection from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. The Dole Institute of Politics will host an interfaith event, "From Fear to Hope: Commemorating 9/11" from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Jane Tedder, a survivor of the terrorist attacks, will be the featured speaker.
A candle light remembrance will be held on Memorial Drive from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. that evening. Elizabeth Berghout, associate professor of music, will present a carillon performance from the Memorial Campanile and Sara Rosen, senior vice provost; Lawrence Mayor Aron E. Cromwell; and Libby Johnson, student body president, will all provide remarks.
