KU seeks nominations for 2015 Higuchi-KU Endowment Research Awards

LAWRENCE — Nominations will be accepted through April 1 for the 2015 Higuchi-KU Endowment Research Achievement Awards. The awards – one in each of four broad areas of study – are the highest honor given for Kansas Board of Regents university faculty accomplishments in research, scholarship and creative activity.

The four awards were established in 1981 by Regents Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Pharmacy Takeru Higuchi, his wife, Aya Higuchi, and KU Endowment. Each honors one of the leaders of KU Endowment who were instrumental in recruiting Higuchi to the University of Kansas in 1967:
• The Balfour Jeffrey Research Award in the field of the Humanities and Social Sciences
• The Olin Petefish Research Award in the field of Basic Sciences
• The Dolph Simons Research Award in the field of Biomedical Sciences
• The Irvin Youngberg Research Award in the field of Applied Sciences

Anyone may submit a nomination. Each award includes $10,000 to be expended over five years in support of the recipient’s research activities. The honorees are also recognized at a public ceremony in the fall. The 2014 recipients were Victor Bailey, history, and Craig Lunte, chemistry, from KU, along with Susan Brown, biology, and Frank White, plant pathology, from Kansas State University.

The criteria for each award, a list of past recipients, submission guidelines, and the nomination form are available online. Questions about the nomination process may be directed to Teresa Kopsa, (785) 864-3567.
