University to host KU 150 book panel
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas community is invited to attend an event in celebration of KU’s sesquicentennial book, “Transforming the University of Kansas: A History, 1965-2015.”
A panel discussion will be led by the book’s co-editors, Professor John Rury and Associate Professor Kim Cary Warren, and it will feature many of the book’s authors. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union.
“In commemorating the sesquicentennial anniversary of the University of Kansas’ founding, this book reflects upon the last 50 years of people, politics and institutional developments that have made KU into the distinctive institution that it is today,” write Warren and Rury in the preface of the book.
The book features writings from 10 KU authors, including a forward by Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little. Combining sections on “leadership and politics,” “teaching and research” and “students, protests and sports,” the book accomplishes its goal of synthesizing a rich history of excellence at KU.
The sesquicentennial book features writings from:
- John Rury, professor of education and history
- Kim Cary Warren, associate professor of history, director of graduate studies for women, gender and sexuality studies
- Susan Twombly, professor of higher education; chair, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies
- Burdett Loomis, professor of political science
- James Woelfel, professor of philosophy and of humanities and Western civilization
- Megan Greene, associate professor of history, director of the Center for East Asian Studies
- Joshua Rosenbloom, professor of economics and history
- William Tuttle Jr., professor emeritus of American studies
- Kathryn Nemeth Tuttle, associate vice provost emerita
- Francis “Bernie” Kish, lecturer for the Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Science
A similar event featuring a panel of “Transforming the University of Kansas” authors will take place at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at Regnier Hall Auditorium on the KU Edwards Campus. To reserve a seat, please RSVP to the KU Alumni Association by Thursday, Oct. 1.
Before and after the Oct. 6 event, a KU historical display will be available for viewing in the Regnier Hall parking lot in the KU Mobile Collaboratory. Called the “MoCOLAB” for short, the repurposed 1972 31’ Airstream Land Yacht was conceived and designed to be KU’s community classroom on wheels.
This event is hosted by KU Alumni Association, KU Bookstore, KU Libraries and KU Edwards Campus.
The panel discussion is one of many events throughout the year designed to celebrate KU’s sesquicentennial. Past KU 150 events include the ribbon-cutting for Jayhawk Boulevard Phase III and the naming of Chalmers Hall last month.
