Pasik-Duncan elected to Board of Governors for technology association

LAWRENCE — Bozenna Pasik-Duncan, professor of mathematics and courtesy professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Kansas, has been elected to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Society for Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) for 2016-2018. She has also been appointed to the Mathematical Association of America’s Haimo Distinguished Teaching Committee for the years 2016-2020.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest technical professional association advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. SSIT is concerned with how technology affects the world and with how the application of technology can improve the world. The society focuses on issues such as humanitarian engineering; environmental issues that include climate change, green technologies and sustainable design; privacy and security; other economic, health and safety implications of technology; engineering ethics and professional responsibility; engineering education, including K-12, and engineering education in social implications of technology; history of technology; public policy related to engineering, technology and science; health and health care technologies and effect; reliable energy and social issues related to energy, and social issues of information technology and telecommunications.

The Mathematical Association of America is the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level. Members include university, college and high school teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business and industry. 

Pasik-Duncan is a Fellow of IEEE and has served in many leadership capacities in the organization. She is also a Fellow of the International Federation of Control. Pasik-Duncan is an advocate for women in STEM fields internationally. She is the founder and faculty sponsor of the KU Student Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics, and she is a member of the KU Women Hall of Fame.
