Shogren appointed co-director for KU disabilities center
LAWRENCE — Karrie Shogren has been appointed the co-director of the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities. Shogren, associate professor of special education, also serves as the co-director of the Beach Center on Disability. Both centers are affiliated with the Life Span Institute at the University of Kansas.
Co-directed by Michael Wehmeyer, professor of special education and director of the Beach Center, the mission of the KUCDD is to enhance the quality of life, self-determination and inclusion of Kansans with developmental disabilities and their families. It is part of a national network of 67 University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities through the Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
Shogren's research focuses on self-determination and systems of support for students with disabilities. She is one of the co-authors of Intellectual Disability: Definition, Classification, and Systems of Support, the 11th Edition of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities' seminal definition of intellectual disability.
