Architecture & Design dean candidate Michael McClure to present Feb. 15

LAWRENCE – The first candidate for the University of Kansas School of Architecture & Design dean position will give his public presentation from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, in The Forum at Marvin Hall. Michael McClure is one of four candidates who will present publicly on their approach to leadership, how they emphasize design thinking and their insights on the key areas of emphasis for the school over the next five years.

McClure is the interim dean of the College of the Arts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and a founding partner of Emery McClure Architecture. He was the College of the Arts associate dean since 2013.

McClure joined the faculty in the School of Architecture and Design at UL Lafayette in 2001. McClure has taught at the Pratt Institute in New York, Tulane University and Louisiana State University.

Throughout his tenure at UL Lafayette, McClure has made significant contributions to the architecture program, winning advising awards and initiating studies with his students into ways of integrating architecture with the specific conditions of coastal wetlands.

In 2011, McClure was awarded the UL Lafayette Distinguished Professor Award, which recognizes faculty for their research activities, teaching effectiveness and contributions to their professional and campus life. He also received the 2017-18 Research Excellence Award from UL Lafayette and boasts dozens published works.

McClure, a member of the Louisiana Architectural Selection Board, has also had a prestigious career in the private sector. In 2008, he and his partner, Ursula Emery McClure, were awarded the Gorham P. Stevens Rome Prize in Architecture. Each year, the prize is awarded to about 30 artists and scholars who represent the highest standard of excellence and who are in the early or middle stages of their careers.

Before co-founding Emery McClure Architecture in New York City, McClure worked for Karen Bausman + Associates, Gluckman Mayner Architects and Robert A.M. Stern Architects.

McClure earned his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis and a Master’s of Architecture from Columbia University.

A recording of McClure’s presentation will be available to view Feb. 16. His presentation will be 30-45 minutes, with a short question-and-answer session to follow. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to offer their impressions and observations of each candidate online. Feedback is due by 5 p.m. March 1.
