LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas community is mourning the death of longtime KU Libraries employee Daniel Sodders, who died July 29 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Daniel Sodders. On behalf of the entire university, I offer my deepest condolences to Daniel’s family, friends and colleagues as they mourn this loss,” said Chancellor Douglas A. Girod.

Sodders began working for KU Libraries as a student employee in 1995. He was then hired as a library assistant I in 1997 and worked up to the highest rank of library associate in 2006, his title through 2023.

“Daniel was a devoted employee and treasured colleague here at KU Libraries, dedicating more than 26 years of service to KU. I extend my deepest sympathies to all who were fortunate to work with him, especially his teams in Watson cataloging and Spencer processing,” said Carol E. Smith, dean of KU Libraries.

Sodders received his master’s degree in history in 1988 and his doctorate in history in 1996, both from KU. His role was primarily as a serial cataloger in regular and special collections. His ability to read many languages, his broad educational background and detail-oriented skills made him exceptional in his role.

“Daniel Sodders was the definition of an exceptional employee,” said Sonja Holmgren, library assistant. “His expert-level knowledge of serials cataloging paired with his deep institutional knowledge made him an invaluable asset to the cataloging department and the libraries as a whole. Daniel was frequently called upon to advise and assist in high-level problem-solving for others both within and outside of the department, including supervisors and unit heads. He consistently demonstrated a high level of quality, thoroughness and thoughtfulness in everything he did.”

Sodders is survived by his wife, Joy Sodders, who retired from KU in 2016. They met while working at KU Libraries and married in 2008.

Services will take place at 1 p.m. Aug. 11 at River City Church.
