LAWRENCE — KU Student Affairs has welcomed Chris Corbett as the new director for Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS).

Chris Corbett, University of Kansas director of Counseling & Psychological Services

With over 15 years of experience in collegiate mental health and higher education, Corbett joins CAPS at a time of growth and development. In addition to his experience within counseling centers, Corbett has also volunteered time for several professional organizations, including the Higher Education Mental Health Alliance, the International Association of Counseling Services and the American College Counseling Association, where he served as president.

“Dr. Corbett has a strong background and commitment to student mental health and well-being,” said Jennifer Wamelink, associate vice provost. “We are grateful he was able to join our community in time to welcome Jayhawks back to campus. His participation in KU Student Housing move-in activities and the Sexual Assault Prevention & Education Center’s Jayhawk Give a Flock — a bystander intervention training for students — is a testament to his dedication to outreach. Dr. Corbett has already demonstrated his intent to be a familiar and accessible leader in a few short months.”

As KU’s director for CAPS, Corbett leads a team of professionals providing mental health supports to the KU student community. In addition to  therapy services, CAPS provides support for psychiatry, urgent drop-ins and remote teletherapy through a partnership with the Telus Health Student Support program. CAPS also provides training to master’s and doctoral students through an APA-accredited training program.

“The University of Kansas is a special place. From the moment I arrived I have been impressed by KU’s commitment to well-being, including mental health,” Corbett said. “I look forward to working with our amazing students, faculty, staff and university leadership to improve health and wellness for all members of the Jayhawk community through the strategic planning process, Jayhawks Rising. My appreciation to everyone for the warm welcome.”

KU Student Affairs, a division led by Vice Provost Tammara Durham, coordinates and develops student services and programs that encourage a connection to community, celebration of identity and personal exploration, and expanding of personal definitions of wellness.
