Final dean candidate for KU School of Music to present Nov. 15

LAWRENCE — Shannon de l’Etoile will be the last candidate for the University of Kansas School of Music dean position to give a public presentation on her vision for the school.

Her presentation will take place 4-5 p.m. Nov. 15 in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall. The event will be livestreamed, and the passcode is 047508.

De l’Etoile is the associate dean of graduate studies at the University of Miami’s School of Music, a position she has held for 11 years.

Members of the KU community are encouraged to attend each presentation and provide feedback to the search committee.

A candidate feedback survey will be open for two business days following the conclusion of each finalist’s visit. A link to the survey and a recording of de l’Etoile’s presentation will be available after the presentation on the search page until the survey closes.

As associate dean of graduate studies, de l’Etoile oversees 41 graduate degree programs and assigns financial awards for more than 300 students per year.

Previously, de l’Etoile directed the University of Miami’s music therapy program for 11 years. She was also a music therapy faculty member and research associate at Colorado State University in the Center for Biomedical Research in Music, and she taught music therapy at the University of Iowa. 

A board-certified music therapist and member of the American Music Therapy Association, de l’Etoile conducts interdisciplinary research on infants’ response to music and has published 50 works. She is a fellow of the Robert F. Unkefer Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy and was one of four University of Miami faculty nominated for the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Leaders Network program. De l’Etoile serves on the editorial review board for the Journal of Music Therapy and was previously a member of the editorial review board for Music Therapy Perspectives.

De l’Etoile earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music therapy from Colorado State University and a doctorate in music education with an emphasis in music therapy from KU.
