KU center will offer workshop on being an ally to undocumented immigrants
LAWRENCE — For those interested in learning how to be a better ally to undocumented immigrants in the U.S., a University of Kansas center will host a workshop for the KU and Lawrence communities.
The Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies will host Allyship with Undocumented Immigrants: A Community Workshop from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Spencer Museum of Art. Space is limited, and advance registration is recommended.
This workshop — in partnership with the KU Office of Multicultural Affairs, Sanctuary Alliance Lawrence and the Spencer Museum — will be led by CLACS and OMA faculty and staff who work with and respond to the needs of marginalized students, staff and faculty at KU.
The workshop is inspired by artist Danielle Roney’s work in the Spencer Museum of Art’s exhibition “knowledges,” which is on view through Jan. 5, 2020. Roney’s large-scale sculpture Strata translates recordings of voices offered by undocumented immigrants into animations of light, creating dazzling portraits of these individuals without revealing their identities. Each animation represents one voice, many from within the migrant community in and around Lawrence. Migrants and immigrants are encouraged to submit recordings for this interactive art project. More information, including instructions for participation, is available online.
The workshop is free and open to the public. The subject matter, including case studies and other examples, will be of particular interest to educators and students.
