Faculty, staff and students encouraged to volunteer for 2025 Hawk Week sexual violence prevention training program

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas leaders are encouraging faculty, staff, graduate students and upper-class undergraduate students to put the IRISE values into action by volunteering for the Jayhawks Give A Flock bystander intervention program Aug. 10 and 16.

Put on by KU’s Sexual Assault Prevention & Education Center (SAPEC), Jayhawks Give A Flock provides incoming students with skills to identify and disrupt behavior that puts others at risk of harm. This evidence-based program empowers students to prevent sexual violence through bystander intervention and to take an active role in creating an exceptional learning community.

Since August 2018, more than 1,100 volunteers have helped train over 22,000 Jayhawks to be active bystanders. Last year alone, more than 4,800 undergraduate students were trained. This August, SAPEC needs 250 volunteers to be a part of this KU tradition.

Facilitators will train incoming students to be active bystanders against sexual violence, and additional volunteers will assist with directing students to their assigned sessions or providing further event support.

SAPEC will work with volunteers to accommodate any scheduling needs. Individuals who register to facilitate Jayhawks Give a Flock sessions will receive comprehensive curriculum training. Child care for children ranging from 18 months to 12 years is provided Aug. 16 upon request for participating volunteers through Hilltop Child Development Center.

Volunteers and facilitators can sign up for the following shifts:

Sunday, Aug. 10

  • 9-11 a.m.

Saturday, Aug. 16

  • Session 1: 9-11 a.m.
  • Session 2: Noon-2 p.m.
  • Session 3: 3-5 p.m.

All volunteers will receive a limited-edition event T-shirt. Breakfast will be provided Aug. 10, and lunch will be provided Aug. 16. Volunteers who assist with three or more sessions will receive an additional appreciation gift.

Any faculty, staff, graduate student or upper-class undergraduate interested in volunteering can fill out this form or email SAPEC Program Coordinator Jaclyn Carpenter at carpenterjaclyn@ku.edu.
