First School of Education & Human Sciences dean candidate to present March 5

LAWRENCE — Lisa Wolf-Wendel, Roy A. Roberts Distinguished Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies at the University of Kansas, will be the first dean finalist to share her vision and strategies for the future of the KU School of Education & Human Sciences.

Wolf-Wendel’s presentation is set for 3-4 p.m. March 5 in the Capitol Federal Hall Colloquium. The event will also be livestreamed, and the passcode is 842442.

Wolf-Wendel, who has been a KU faculty member for more than 30 years, additionally serves as the SOEHS senior associate dean for research and graduate studies.

The remaining candidates will be announced approximately 1-2 business days before their respective campus visits. Their presentations will take place at the following dates and locations:

  • Candidate 2: 3:45-4:45 p.m. March 9, Joseph R. Pearson Hall, Room 150
  • Candidate 3: 4-5 p.m. March 12, Capitol Federal Hall Colloquium
  • Candidate 4: 3:45-4:45 p.m. March 23, Joseph R. Pearson Hall, Room 150.

Wolf-Wendel has written numerous books and refereed journal articles related to equity issues in higher education. Her research focuses on faculty issues, including studies of the academic labor market and the needs of international faculty and faculty from historically underrepresented groups. Several recent research projects have explored the policy response of academic institutions in the wake of demands for dual career couple accommodations and work and family integration.

Her book “Academic Motherhood” was awarded the Outstanding Publication Award by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in 2013. She was also recognized for the School of Education Faculty Research Achievement Award in 2004 and the Early Career Achievement Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) in 2000.

Wolf-Wendel is the editor of the New Directions for Higher Education Series and serves on several editorial boards. She is active in both the ASHE and AERA. She is the former president of ASHE and is currently a member of the AERA ethics committee. 

Wolf-Wendel has received several accolades for her teaching and advising, including the Ned Fleming Trust Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2019, the Gene A. Budig Writing Professorship in 2019, the Gene A. Budig Teaching Professorship in 2010 and the W.T. Kemper Fellowship for Recognition in Teaching and Advising Excellence in 2006. She was awarded the ASHE Distinguished Service Award in 2017.

Wolf-Wendel earned her doctorate in higher education from the Claremont Graduate University and her bachelor’s degree in psychology and communications from Stanford University.

The School of Education & Human Sciences Dean search committee includes representatives from faculty, staff, students and alumni. It is being led by Paul Popiel, dean of the School of Music, and Tammara Durham, vice provost for Student Affairs.
