Graduate student Hosub Shim receives Early Career Prize

LAWRENCE — A graduate student in the Department of History was recently awarded the coveted Early Career Prize by the International Journal of Military History and Historiography. Hosub Shim received the award for his article "The Battle of An Khe Pass (1972): The Implications of the South Korean Army’s Pyrrhic Victory in the Vietnamization Phase of the Vietnam War.”

Awarded annually, the prize recognizes an outstanding academic article in the field of military history written by a graduate student or early-career scholar who has been published in the International Journal of Military History and Historiography in the last year. The winner receives $1,000 and is recognized in the journal and on the journal's website.

Shim particularly impressed the editorial board with his bilingual and multi-archival research, command of literature, solid methodology and his detailed and nuanced argument. The winning article is published online as an advance article and will appear in print in the 40/1 issue of the journal.

"This award means a lot to me, especially for those who take the first step toward a long journey as a historian since I'm going back to South Korea this summer to work as a history professor in the Korea Military Academy," Shim said. "I hope this article can contribute to broadening the perspectives of the Vietnam War."
