KDHE finds insufficient water monitoring on KU Lawrence campus

LAWRENCE — During a routine inspection in July 2023, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) determined that monitoring of chlorine residual in drinking water on the University of Kansas Lawrence campus did not fully meet requirements. KU had been measuring the chlorine residual during weekdays, but not on weekends or holidays.

This did not pose a significant health risk but is considered a violation by KDHE necessitating a Public Notice of Chlorine Residual Violation. KU purchases its water from the city of Lawrence and does not further treat the water. The city of Lawrence continuously measures chlorine residual seven days a week, including holidays.

As required by law, the city of Lawrence uses chlorine as a disinfectant at its treatment plants, which is an essential element of drinking water treatment because of the protection it provides against waterborne disease-causing microorganisms.
